Any pool holding more than two feet of water needs a barrier at least four feet high. The gap at the bottom cannot be more than two inches, the openings cannot pass a four-inch ball, and the gate has to open away from the pool and latch itself. We build to all of it.
If the gate's latch release is lower than 54 inches from the bottom, the code adds rules: the release goes on the pool side, and there is no opening near it big enough for a child to reach through. Setting the release up high is the clean way to meet the requirement.
