The material read
Northern white cedar and pressure-treated pine are what we set here. Cedar resists damp and insects without chemical treatment; pine needs a sealer sooner. Both move with humidity, so boards cup in July and tighten in January. Posts go below the frost line, because ground that heaves in March lifts a shallow post right out of level.

Picket FencesSpaced cedar or pine boards, 3 to 4 ft, painted or stained. The style that carries a front yard: it marks the boundary, holds a small dog, and keeps the sightline open. The most paint surface per foot of any wood fence.
Wood Privacy FencesSolid 6 ft cedar or pressure-treated pine, no gaps, stockade or board-on-board. Full coverage from grade up for overlooked yards, exposed decks, and pools. The most wind-loaded fence we build, so post depth carries the job.
Shadow Box FencesAlternating boards on both faces of the rail, gapped for airflow. Finished on both sides, so it settles shared-line arguments, and open enough that wind passes through instead of pushing the run over. Screens straight on, not at an angle.
Lattice FencesCrossed cedar strips in a solid frame, as a fence or as a topper on a privacy run. Screens partially, carries climbing plants, and keeps light and air moving through a small space. The most delicate wood we install, so framing matters.Estimated cost

Fifteen to thirty years, and the posts decide it. Boards and rails can be swapped; a rotted post means digging. Cedar reaches the top of that range, pressure-treated pine the middle. A fence re-sealed every three or four years outlives one left alone by roughly a decade.
Not for the fence to stand, but yes if you care how it looks. Left bare, cedar turns silver-gray within two seasons and pine goes gray-green. A clean and seal every three to four years holds color and keeps water out of end grain, where rot starts.
Picket or lattice, usually. A six-foot solid fence on a small lot makes the yard read smaller and blocks light a garden may need. Four-foot picket defines the line without walling it in, and lattice screens partially while keeping the space open overhead.
