The material read
New England is hard on gates in particular. Wood swells shut in a wet June and swings loose by September, so we hang it on adjustable hinges with extra clearance at the latch. Vinyl and aluminum hold their dimension year round. A shallow-set gate post is the bigger risk: it lifts over winter and the gate stops latching by March.

Because the gate post moved. A post set above the frost line lifts as the ground freezes, raising one side of the opening and throwing the latch out of line. Posts set 4 ft deep in concrete fix that, and adjustable hinges absorb the seasonal swelling in wood.
Four feet clears almost every walk-behind and most zero-turn mowers. Measure your widest machine and add six inches on each side. If a truck or trailer ever has to reach the back yard, put in a 10 or 12 ft double gate now. Widening later means resetting posts.
Yes. We pull the panel at the chosen opening, set new gate posts at full depth in concrete, and rehang the fence around them. Line posts almost never carry a swinging gate, so they get replaced rather than reused. The post work and opening are included in the project quote.
