The material read
This is where New England is hardest on a material. Cane is hollow and takes water at every cut and node, and when that water freezes it reopens last winter's split a little wider. Ground contact is fatal, so panels hang clear of grade on a frame. Penetrating oil each spring is the difference between five years and ten.

Five to ten years with annual sealing and proper clearance off the ground. Left untreated, cane can begin splitting and graying within two seasons here. Freeze-thaw is the mechanism: water gets into cut ends and nodes, expands as it freezes, and widens the split each winter.
It survives snow that falls on it, not snow that lands from a roof. Cane is light and flexes, so a framed panel handles normal accumulation. A roof slide or plow bank pushed against it will crush a section. Site the screen away from both.
Yes. Rolled cane ties directly to chain link fabric, which supplies structure and height. The existing fence must be assessed before the work is quoted; cane will not straighten a leaning fence.
